M. Dickson, The Bloomsbury Review "This monograph should serve as a wake-up call: there are a lot of excellent artists - particularly women artists - still being ignored, eclipsed by lesser, more colorful ones, in large part because they suffer the common fate of being discretely modest." Mary Sherman, Journal of Appalachian Studies. Moser, Senior Curator, Smithsonian American Art Museum and author of Singular Impressions: The Monotype in America "A fascinating, detailed story of an artist's life perhaps the definitive account of Blanche Lazzell's life and the significance of her career." Her studies with Albert Gleizes in Paris during the 1920's were critical to her development and that was reflected in her work in Provincetown, Massachusetts where she settled seasonally after her return. Rich biographical material examines her early life and studies in West Virginia and her fier. "Much needed book" according to Carl E. Johnson Jr.. This is a very nice, lavishly illustrated, large-format art book that is beautifully printed and bound. As for text, the editors have assembled a number of short essays, surrounded with lots of white space, by scholars on various aspects of Lazzell's life and art, and the social and artistic background in which she lived and worked.
