"Finally, a dictionary of musical terms that gets it right!" according to Mark Starr. I have bought a number of musical dictionaries over the years -- and all of them, for one reason or another, have proved themselves to be either inaccurate, overly scholarly, irrelevant or impractical to use. Inevitably, they wound up little-used in my garage, and finally as donations to my public library. The problem with these dictionaries was always that they were written by linguists and music history professors with little or no experience in the practical side of professional music-making.Finally, Anthony Cirone has jumped in to fill the void. He has produced a small dictionary of foreign musical terms that is destined to be stuf. Paul Yeon Lee said An Excellent Book for all Musicians!!!. Cirone's Pocket Dictionary of Foreign Musical Terms is a must have for anyone who aspires to understand composers' directions. This small, but relatively complete, handbook of terms is more than a listing of common terms. It addresses the sometimes obscure instructions that baffle the modern player, but which would have made sense to a contemporary of the composer. In my experience as a symphony musician (SF Symphony Trumpet Section, Retired), knowing and applying the sense of a composer's instructions has always made me a better performer. Get this book!
