This autobiography of the long-time star of "Gunsmoke" had lots of details of the early life of James Arness. It was written in an interesting way and gave a solid characterization of Arness. He had a very long run on television's Gunsmoke and a role in the miniseries How The West Was Won. James Arness gives the full story on his early years, his family, his military career and his film work in Hollywood, including appearances in the cult-favorite science fiction movies Them! and The Thing. His own work as a producer is covered. Actor and fellow Gunsmoke performer Burt Reynolds has written a foreword to the book.. Appendices include comments by show biz colleagues and Gunsmoke alumni, and a sampling of letters received from his fans. This is a republication in paperback of the 2001 edition--the long anticipated account of one of the icons of 20th-century television. He offers many anecdotes of interacting with the Gunsmoke family, such as Miss Kitty, Doc and Festus. His post-theatrical period is also covered. The man, the myth, the legend-an enduring hero! I was so glad to discover the story behind the man who is one of my favorite childhood heroes. 'Matt Dillon' had a considerable influence in shaping the values I hold. The moral gems scattered throughout his long-running show, Gunsmoke, still influence many a fan, even today. While it is clear from reading this book that James Arness is quite similar to his beloved character, there is also much more to him than Matthew Dillon. I wish TV programming today created shows as valuable as 'Gunsmoke'. However, thanks to the TV Land Network, new generations can watch reruns of what I think is one of the
