A Shame Richard Wells This is an edited review. I'm not changing my mind about the writing, just trying to be a little kinder. Full disclosure: I gave up on page 35. Here's why:My first hint of something amiss came with the author's admission that he'd never seen a full Leonard Cohen concert. While I'm sure it's possible to write a biography of a living and currently touring performing artist without having ever caught a whole show, it's inexcusable.Hints started piling up as I had to r. "Not Quite the Cohen Bio I've Been Looking For" according to haregrog. This book is the mistitled story of the development of Leonard Cohen's musical career, and the biographical information, most or all of which is available elsewhere, is subservient to the story of the development of the art itself. There are some worthwhile qualities here, but since my initial enthusiasm for this book, its drawbacks have begun to outweigh its merits.Anthony Reynolds has put together an accessible but reasonably serious biography that addresses LC f. "An enjoyable book I learned a lot from" according to Mr. Steven Andrews. I really enjoyed Leonard Cohen: A Remarkable Life by Anthony Reynolds and this is why: I have been a huge fan of Cohen's since I first discovered him via the late great John Peel's show back in the late '60s. I have seen Cohen live and I have bought and devoured many of his albums, and as a singer-songwriter myself I count him as one of my main musical "heroes" and influences even though my songs and style are very different.
