"Great overview of American folk music" according to Kenneth Baake. I've been playing, singing, and studying folk music for some years now. I enjoyed this book for its thematic approach to folk songs. It put into a larger historical context many of the songs I have known. I also read of new treasures that I was not familiar with, including mining and logging songs. "Life Flows On" would be interesting to musicologists looking for a survey text for a class in American folk music.
