A few bits of information were nice, but they were few and far between. What killed it for me is how the band's arrogance comes through. The writer claims to be close with the band, having been "with them" for quite some time, and he let's you know that he's only printing what they want you to read, which is usually a distorted perspective. I bought this because, even though I mainly loved their late period, I don't know much about how it was created. Instead, again, I'm hit by arrogance . , so I know the stories. I bought this because, even though I mainly loved their late period, I don't know much about how it was created. Instead, again, I'm hit by arrogance . "Excellent R.E.M Story" according to Kari. This book met and exceeded my expectations. The story of R.E.M expertly told and nicely written. Covers major milestones and discusses all sessions and resulting records. Focus is firmly on the band and its highs and lows and final graceful withdrawal. If you are a "music" fan wanting to know about these aspects of the band, this book is for you. If you are an "obsessed" fan and want to read about the private lives of the band's members, this book will not give you much.. "Very enjoyable book" according to M. Berman. Lots of interesting stories and information. Occasionally bogs down in details about specific concerts and recording sessions. It's clear that the writer is very much a fan of R.E.M., both as a band and as people. Whether this is a good thing in terms of biography is up to the reader to decide. I would have liked a bit more perspective about R.E.M.'s legacy given the fact that popular music took a very different turn after their heyday in the late 80s/early 90s.

However, R.E.M. Discussing fame, fortune and sexuality with the same keen eye he casts on the group's astonishing musical catalogue, Perfect Circle is neither blind fan worship nor jaundiced critical cynicism, but a balanced and thorough telling of one of the most compelling rock stories of our time. All such restrictions have since been lifted for newer editions, of which there have been several, and this latest incarnation of the book – now retitled Perfect Circle – brings the story to its natural conclusion with R.E.M.’s decision to disband in September, 2011. – being R.E.M. Tony Fletcher’s biography of the enigmatic quartet from Athens, Georgia, benefits not only from his long association with the band but also from the co-operation of the band itself.  . – were disinclined to reveal this at the time the book was first published in 1989 and Tony was thus obliged to keep this under his hat. Drawing on dozens of interviews with friends, associates and the band members themselves, this is not just the story of one group's rise through cult status, but the story of American alte
