Good, but won't help you build a pickup As an amateur amp builder and pickup winder I found this book a little lacking. It contains a good bit of history, is laid out well and explains the functioning aspects/components of a pickup very well. But it doesn't really get into specifics on any pickups, nor does it cover a vast number of early designs or builders. I'll use P.A. Bigsby as an example here, he had a huge influence on the industry, built the first solid body electric guitar to be sold in the US and Les Paul helped him design the pickup, but this isn't in any book I've read on pickups. That said, I'm happy with the book and recommend it . Jeffrey Smith said A Pickup Pick Me Up. This book looks terrible, but the info is great. The cover is slick, but the interior layout and design look bad--like photocopies and bad illustrations and clip arty. Lots of great info tho. The data is awesome, the presentation is just sub-par. Good for a history of electric guitar pick-ups. Good for the repair library and for concepts of design and the evolution of the technology. NOT A HOW-TO, this is a lovingly assembled history book for guitar freaks.. Roberto Gatti said Useful. I was looking for a collection of info on pickup technology and building. From early attempt to catch mag-field variations to be converted in electrical signal, starting from singol coils to double coils (humbuckers), to the carachteristics of today reference pickup are collected in the book presented in historical sequence, with many examples of applications in the most famuos models of giutars and basses. Useful reference for pickup home making (material selection, design criteria, winding equipment) are presented as well. This book can be suggested to everibody interested both to pickup technology and
