Carlisle seemed to focus on the "human" and emotional side of George instead of taking the easy route with one drinking and drug story right after another that seemed to grow in Allen's book. The "bad days" as George calls them are also in Carlisl. Brett Baggott said boozing and abusing (including some drugs like "uppers" and such). I've read every single book that I'm aware of which has any mention of my father, Shug Baggott's, time with George Jones. Of them all, this is the only one I'm aware of where the author actually interviewed my father. All the others had lots to say about my father's time with George, but none, other than Mrs. Carlisle, took the time to record his side. In fact, most were so lazy they just repeated what others had said. My father never read any of these books because he was planning to wr. Another bleeding heart said A pretty good read. I recommend this book not only for its detail (like most good books, this one has an index) but also for the discography, which alone is worth the price of admission. I, too, wish the author had just stuck to the interviews and said "said" instead of"retorted," "chuckled" and other descriptions that are more spin than storytelling. Inaccuracies exist, such as how GJ was nicknamed "The Possum," a story I would have expected his sister to know. Another drawback -- and this one is my fault
