I have been reading Costigan's brilliantly enthralling text and admiring the superb photographs of Clarke's windows by Cullen. Cullen captures the look of stained glass in his photographs, to be able to do this enables him to remain faithful to the painterly strokes and magical colour work so masterfully deployed by Clarke. Within the pages of 'Strangest Genius' we have images of the windows too far away for some of us to vi. The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light James Rockhill I just received this and the revised edition of Nicola Gordon Bowe's HARRY CLARKE: THE LIFE AND WORK from a friend in Rathmines, and I could not be happier.Here in the United States, Clarke tends to be best known for his simultaneously grotesque and beautiful illustrations of Poe and Goethe or his somewhat less familiar illustrations for Perrault and Andersen. His largest body of work, however, is devoted to stained glass, and this gorgeous book does full justice to that work, in which the sublime takes the center stage without entirely crowding out the gri.
