His candid, hilarious, self-lacerating memoir, The Book of Drugsfeaturing cameos by Redman, Ani DiFranco, the late Jeff Buckley, and othersis the story of his band’s rise and bitter collapse, the haunted and darkly comical life of addiction, and the perhaps even weirder world of recovery.. Mike Doughty first came to prominence as the leader of the band Soul Coughing then did an abrupt sonic left turn, much to the surprise of his audience, transforming into a solo performer of stark, dusky, but strangely hopeful tunes. He battled addiction, gave up fame when his old band was at the height of its popularity, drove thousands of miles, alone, across America, with just an acoustic guitar

He just doesn’t like what they do to him, and at this point in his life, he has no desire to try them again. --June Sawyers . He recalls, too, his various druggie activities, including dancing in a club under the influence of acid and snorting heroin in a basement dressing room. Although Doughty’s many drug escapades become a bit redundant after a while, anyone with an interest in pop culture generally and rock music in particular should appreciate this insider’s account of life on the road. Mistitled but marvelous I really liked this one, got sucked in from the start. I don't know if I'm more critical of memories, but I find most of them are awful. This one isn't, although if Soul Coughing was important to you, you'll probably wanna punch him- he spews venom against his bandmates for so, so long. Eventually he breaks up the band, but I'm left wondering why he stayed at all. I mean, this is some Code Red venom and you know, when you put it out there publicly, it's a little unfair to the people you're skewering. Also, music *means* som. "The way Mike Doughty writes just sucks you right in" according to Melissa K Smith. This book was enthralling. I couldn't put it down. The way Mike Doughty writes just sucks you right in. Which I should have expected, as he is an amazing poet/lyricist. I also didn't expect that his story of being a drug addicted celebrity would be all that different from every other story you hear about in the music industry. But I was wrong. His self-deprecation and humor is highly relatable, as well as entertaining.
