This text presents an account of Stettheimer's life and art, showing that her paintings provide a social commentary on American culture of her period. It examines her youth, her life abroad, and her friendship with such influential figures as Marcel Duchamp, Charles Demuth and Alfred Stieglitz.
Sussman posits the impact of gender issues, asserting that Stettheimer's "artificiality, stylization, eccentric elegance, and sexual ambiguities" offered "an American female version of camp and dandyism that appealed to many gay admirers." Bloemink writes here on the artist's sense of temporality, indeterminate space, and adds that "the voyage of life and love is made up of isolated episodes, arranged in our memory like miniature versions of a Mozart or Rossini opera." I'm reading this now, and find myself unutterably depressed by the tone of Ms. Bloemnik's writing. It's obvious she researched this dedicated, dynamic, gifted painter and early feminist, but the book so far is pepperred with stupid, defeatist comments about why Florine never married- even as it cites Florine's own dislike of marriage in favor of her career and her vision of herself as dedicated . Left wanting to know more of who this fanciful artist was Just finished this book last night and am left wondering who this incredibly gifted, decorative woman was. Her sister Ettie remains in my mind a jealous monster for having taken her scissors to much of Florine's personal papers and diariesthis is such a shame as we will never know the personal, driving force behind this talented woman.
