"an informative and intriguing portrait of a fascinating artist, and the family who made him" MONTREAL GAZETTE "this biography, like Wainwrights best music, is orchestrated to perfection" RECORD COLLECTOR

Wish I could read it. First off let me qualify that this review concerns the format of the book rather than its content. I'd love to say this was a great read, as I love Rufus Wainwright, but I was physically unable to read it--this printing of "There Will Be Rainbows" is definitely not meant for the vision impaired or, dare I say, anyone past "a certain age." Fair warning for anyone whose eyes are less than fantastic: the book itself is not a large one (think standard paperback) and its "artistic" page layout leaves the reader with a tiny reading area (approx. 3"xWish I could read it. I see that the UK paperback is now subtitled "and the story of Loudon Wainwright and Kate McGarrigle". That's a more accurate summary of the book. It is not just about Rufus but about his extended family. I welcomed this approach. This is one of the best rock biographies I have read. The author is prepared to dissect and deconstruct the music and explains what, in his opinion, works and what doesn't. I disagreed on a few points, I though. Academic Wainwright This biography is well resaerched, too well researched perhaps to the point I feel I am taking a class upon which I will be graded rather than reading a book for enjoyment. It arrived promptly though and in excellent condition. I have learned more about Rufus Wainwright than I did before but have to wade through a lot of backgrouond first.

He has contributed articles to the GUARDIAN, OBSERVER, the IDLER and the NME. Kirk Lake is a writer and musician.
