Sutherland has done a fine job of balancing and great deal of new material D. Sutherland has done a fine job of balancing and great deal of new material and a very fluid text. I knew a great deal about Whistler andhave been exposed to the Detroit Institute of Arts, self portrait and Rockets painting just as Sutherland and be introduced to them early on.It was and enjooyable read that I attempted to stretch out. I know that I will be rereading many sections.. Correspondence Opens New Look at Whistler James J. Johnston Sutherland's "Whistler" biography is an exceptionally well written book. It tells the story of an American expatriate in Europe in the 19th century, one of several, with a deep understanding of the 19th century world. Sutherland is a consummate scholar of 19th century America, and he now proves he knows 19th century Americans very well, even expatriates.I heartily recommend "Whistler: A Life for Art's Sake" to anyone with a desire for knowing the 19th century. Sutherland's access to the Whistler correspondence opens a new window on James Whistler's life.. Academic and dull. Karla Whistler is an American and European painting icon, and rightfully so. He was an interesting man and a brilliant painter. But this biography communicates little of each of those aspects of a very complicated man. This biography is full of the kind of academic minutiae that left me utterly disengaged. If you like biographies like that-this is a bio for you.

"Immensely readablea lively addition to the understanding of this difficult and important American artist."—Kirkus Reviews
