A Most Provocative Biography Someone once told me, "if you walked into a book store and, instead of books, saw the authors sitting on the shelves - grungy, smoking, nasty, unshaven writers - no one would buy the books." I experienced this first-hand when I went to see one of my favorite authors give a talk and witnessed one of the nastiest human beings I've ever had the displeasure of encountering. I never again bought one of his best-sellers. And although I've been a huge fan of the Beatles for half a decade, the latest biography I read of John Lennon left me feeling so queasy that I've b. The Price of Fame Bruce Canwell First, full disclosure: I co-edit and write text material for The Library of American Comics's series of LI'L ABNER reprints (Li'l Abner Volume 5) and Denis Kitchen, as literary executor of the Capp Estate, serves as a contributor. That means I know a little more than the average person about Al Capp, some of which I learned directly from Denis himself. That disclosure out of the way, I've done my best to assess this book strictly as a reader and I see a whole lot to like between these two covers.Capp's life is a story worth the telling, the sort of story that . Capp himself was a familiar personality on TV and radio; as a satirist, he was frequently compared to Mark Twain.Though Li'l Abner brought millions joy, the man behind the strip was a complicated and often unpleasant person. Capp's story is one of incredible highs and lows, of popularity and villainy, of success and failure-told here with authority and heart.. Late in life, his politics became extremely conservative; he counted Richard Nixon

From Booklist *Starred Review* Schumacher, author of Will Eisner: A Dreamer’s Life in Comics (2010), and Kitchen, the influential cartoonist and underground publisher, join forces for this sterling biography of the creator of Li’l Abner. Capp, who died in 1979, is little known today, but he was once a media superstar. Li’l Abner, the newspaper comic strip about hillbillies in the fictional southern town of Dogpatch, ran from 1934 to 1977, taking the world by storm with its larger-than-life comic characters, its eccentric dialect, and its increasingly outrageous (and controvers
