Complementing each chapter are commentaries from Fischl’s friends, mentors, and lovers; the result is a remarkably objective warts-and-all memoir. --Greg Baldino . As with his acclaimed and notoriously provocative portraits, Fischl’s self-portrait draws its best energies from exhibition and confrontation as he pulls no punches in depicting his experiences as a gritty bohemian and upscale urbanite. From Booklist How much fame does it take to stop an artist from working in top form? How much pain does it take to keep an artist going? Eric Fischl is America’s foremost narrative painter; his paintings hang in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and in collections throughout the world. He lives with his wife, the acclaimed landscape artist April Gornik, in Sag Harbor on Long Island.

It was a world of fashion, fame, cocaine and alcohol that for a time threatened to undermine all that Fischl had achieved. In Bad Boy, renowned American artist Eric Fischl has written a penetrating, often searing exploration of his coming of age as an artist, and his search for a fresh narrative style in the highly charged and competitive New York art world in the 1970s and 1980s. More boring than bad GiovanniGF I bought this book after reading the introduction in which Fischl, drunk and high on coke, confronts a road rager in front of the police on the night of his first museum retrospective. Sadly, it turns out to be pretty much the only exciting part of this competent but sluggish autobiography.Fischl is a nice, earnest guy, but he has a lot of blind spots. He spends waaaay too much time talking about his struggles in art school, evidently unaware that his experience is essentially the same as everyone else who studied art (take my word for it). He has no sense. Bob Clyatt said Great insight into artist's process. Bought the book after seeing the WSJ and FT reviews and have to say it is a great artist's read. I am particularly drawn in by his description of what it's like to be an artist swimming against the tide, finding your unique contribution and voice, navigating the creative tsunami. It is very hard to find this process discussed well by a successful artist. His writing is razor-sharp insightful. Either it's great editing, great thinking on his part or some combination of both but I highly recommend this book.
