Fifty years later, still an amazing story Mary Reinert I first read this book as a teenage having picked it up from the church library. (I'm sure someone probably purchased that book based entirely on the title). I may have forgotten many of the details but I always knew this book had a huge effect on me. I was a naive, white, farm girl in the early 60's reading about an impov. she rode the roller coaster of her career from poor upbringing to Broadway heights and lonely valleys Ethel Waters has been almost completely forgotten by our country. Her success in an era of Jim Crow should serve as a modern day example of true talent parlayed via perseverance. Prisca Molotsi This is one of the best autobiographies I have ever read. Ethel Waters was a great singer and reading this book is very inspirational! I found myself howling with laughter several times, her writing style is incredible! I couldn't put this book down and I devoured it within a day! I highly recommend this wonderful book!
