Good ol Jack Overlook82 This is the best biography I've ever read on Jack. The Marc Eliot one was trash. It was basically like a gossip column written to damage Jacks reputation. THIS biography actually gets it right. It actually talks about how shy he was when he was younger with the ladies. It even covers how incredibly hard he worked to make it in the business. I had no idea! I'm actually surprised that not many have read this yet as it is very well written, and VERY well researched. I've always loved Jack. I grew up in house where we all loved him. There is so much information in here about him that sometimes I was a bit ove. Fascinating portrait of Hollywood's Outlaw Icon If you've ever been curious about the strange combination of gonzo artistry and old-fashioned charisma that comprises Jack Nicholson, this is as good a study as you'll ever find. From his odd upbringing on Neptune Ave. in New Jersey, to the years of journeyman anonymity among the B-movie ranks of Roger Corman in Hollywood, to the belated stardom brought by Easy Rider and ensuing career of onscreen and offscreen excess, Nicholson emerges as a star fully in control of who he is and where he wants to go, and a maverick in a system that is too eager to fit its actors into easy categories. Jack fits no categor. JACK ATTACK ! Amazon Customer I enjoyed this book when it first came out, and thoroughly enjoyed re-reading the first part of the book again, and then reading about the latter stages of Jack's career. Patrick McGilligan is an excellent biographer, with just enough detail to make this an enjoyable read even for the casual movie fan. Today's Jack's birthday, and I always celebrate it by watching one of his movies. I lament the fact that he no longer seems interested in acting, so just have to enjoy the legacy of work he is going to be leaving behind.
Patrick McGilligan has edited the acclaimed Backstory series and written distinguished biographies of film figures including George Cukor, Fritz Lang, Alfred Hitchcock, and, most recently, Orson Welles. He lives in Milwaukee.
“Patrick McGilligan’s book has always been the one Jack deservedintimate, funny, understanding, an inside job. I sometimes wonder if Jack actually wrote it himself.” (David Thomson, author of A Biographical Dictionary of Film)
