Karina Navarro said Great book!. I was looking forward to read this book for a very long time.I'm a Bollywood enthusiastic and, of course, I admire SRK's work. I've seen many of his movies so I found very interesting reading about his life and how he became the legend he is now, only compare to Big B.Anupama Chopra has a way to make you see what she's writing and you can be transported to where she places her narration in a very easy way. This book was helpful because you get to understand Bollywood's standards and is an easy gate to apreciate their movies more openly. This book has some history, is a documentary and a. "Long" according to M. Surani. I love me some Shahrukh Khan. Don't ever believe that I don't.Naturally, I was excited when I found a biography about this actor; why not combine two things I love: SRK and reading. But oh dear, Anupama Chopra's book read like an English 101 assignment. Yes, the information was interesting (and she got it through interviews with the actual people involved, including Khan himself), but Lord Almighty, with all the background history on every single thing, I felt like the book was never going to end.For example (paraphrased):"Shahrukh went to the train station. Here's the history of that. "Covers his life, goes beyond, into history of Indian film and history of India. Very good." according to Now and then. As a new fan of Indian film I discovered Shah Rukh Khan before I understood his stature in the global Indian culture. But after watching several of his films I realized he is in a class by himself. A real phenomenon. This book not only goes over his life, and that phenomenon, it includes richly drawn context of the history of Indian cinema and general history. It was well written, thoughtful about the bigger picture surrounding Indian film production and highly informative. A great first read for a person in the US learning about Indian cinema. (Although it is my Only read on Indian c

Born in New Delhi in 1965, Shah Rukh grew up loving movies, with American John Travolta and Bill Cosby among the stars he admired. As Shah Rukh has became a bigger star, playing a variety of roles, he also helped the industry expand. His films range from traditional themes (Asoka) to remakes of classics (Devdas), song-and-dance romances and even Mission Impossible–type films like Don. Even if you know nothing about Indian cinema, her prose style (Bollywood now recoiled from the mafia like a man shrinking from a sore-covered leper on the street) makes this a bizarrely fun read. . Here is the astonishing true story of Bollywood, a sweeping portrait about a country finding its identity, a movie industry that changed the face of India, and one man's struggle to become a star. As a Muslim in a Hindu majority nation, exulting in classic Indian cultural values, Shah Rukh Khan has come to embody the aspirations and contradictions of a complicated culture tumbling headlong into American style capitalism. Shah Rukh Khan broke into this $1.5 billion business despite the fact that it has always been controlled by a handful of legendary film families and sometimes funded by black market money. His story is the mirror to view the greater Indian story and the underbelly of the culture of Bollywood."A bounty for cinema lovers everywhere." --Mira Nair, Director, The Namesake and Monsoon Wedding"King of Bollywood is the all-singing, all-dancing back stage pass to Bollywood. Shah Rukh Khan's larger than life tale takes us through the colorful and idiosyncratic Bollywood movie industry, where fantastic dreams and outrageous obsessions share the spotlight with extortion, murder, and corruption. Anupama Chopra chronicles the political and cultural story of India with finesse and insight, through fly-on-wall access to one of its biggest, most charming and charismatic stars." -- Gurinder Chadha, director of Bend it Like Beckham "The "Easy Rider Raging Bull" of the Bollywood industry and essential reading for any Shah Rukh Kha
