New York City Tattoo documents the lively, humorous and often violent history of the art from the early years of the 20th century, in the words of the men who "pushed the pins" in places like Coney Island and the Bowery. They reveal facets of New York social history and a volatile, misunderstood and secretive art form.. Tattooing at the time evoked the dangerous fringes of society, and for over a decade Michael McCabe assiduously gained the confidence of the few surviving practitioners of this vanished era. These highly-charged interviews provide a privileged look into a clannish world of honor, respect, and jealously guarded trade secrets

--Entertainment Weekly, Margot Mifflin. Although the book can come across as too specialized for the average reader, New York City Tattoo does unearth and preserve an alluringly gritty chunk of postwar, pre-hippie New York history

Full of humor in the recollections of many well respected old-timers. Very interesting to see the slight differences in recollection, by the subjects' memories of things that happened. Excellent prints of traditional flash and old photos.. Absolute Must Have A Customer So few texts have been written based on quality research into old-school/traditional style tattoos, but this one stands out as a shining example. Wonderfully laid out, providing both a historic, relationship, and spatial vision of what the tattoo culture was from just before WW 2 until the late 60's.Excellent, and I highly recommend for anyone's collection.. "Five Stars" according to Amazon Customer. Such a great book! Every tattooer should own this
