Out Of The Shadows And Into The Darkness There are some books that transend their purpose. Unfortunately, this is not one of them. Francois Maspero's "Out Of The Shadows" is a brief (128 pages) biography of Gerda Taro, who is remembered today as Robert Capa's lover and photographic assistant. Taro died in 1937 and is believed to be the first female photojournalist to die in combat. Curiously, the book begins with Maspero's imaginary interview with Taro 70 years after her death! Much of the book is written in a melodramatic style and lacks meaningful analysis. Maspero has the annoying habit of refering to Capa as "Bob,". Steve Ballard said A decent work on a forgotten chapter of journalism and photography. A decent work, there are some factual discrepancies, but then, in all works on Taro and Capa, they appear.time and memory tends to do that, it is nothing significant, I found it well written.
