Tom said A view into a very interesting life. Memoir of childhood, told in the child's voice. Beautiful use of language (and I assume, very good translation). Reminds me of the smooth, seamless flow of E.B. White's essays. Her ramblings into the flip-flopping mind of the little girl she once was are both endearing and enlightening. The mindset behind the Moomins is revealed, and it is a delight to behold. I love the book, and will read it many times.

Tove Jansson (1914-2001) was born in Helsinki, and was an illustrator and political cartoonist for the left-leaning, anti-Fascist magazine Garm. She is also the author of eleven novels and short-story collections for adults, including The Summer Book and The True Deceiver. In 1994, she was awarded the Prize of the Swedish Academy..
