Examining the communicative powers of asemantic language, the book asks whether music can bring sense to nonsense. The album has no titleor rather, its title is no title: just an empty pair of parentheses. And then there are the lyrics, sung in a deliberately unintelligible tongue called "Hopelandic" which the band invites listeners to interpret freely.Ethan Hayden's book doesn't try to fill in the gaps between the album's parentheses, but instead explores the ways in which listeners might attempt to do so. You have to be interested in special topics to fully enjoy this book - Not for any kind of Sigur Ros' fans This is not a typical book about music fandom, musical facts, biographies or historical accounts. It is an intellectual exercise that comes close to a musicological work. Take it as a warning, as I am afraid the book can deceive some of its potential readers. That was, somehow, my case. I am familiar with musicological texts (for example the excellent series by Ashgate or Bloombsbury publishers) so the approach, tone and vocabulary were not intimidating to me. Midnight To Six said Sigur Ros for linguistics geeks. One of the things I like most about the Sigur Ros for linguistics geeks One of the things I like most about the 33 1/3 series is that besides each book focusing on an individual album, the writers are given almost no guiding rules on how they choose to explore that album. You might pick up a volume that recounts the making of an album, or one based on the author’s own personal experiences listening to an album at different points in their life, or you might even get one where the author writes a novel based on an album. Ethan Hayden is a composer and performer, currently pursuing a Ph.D. in music at the University at Buffalo, US.

“Ethan Hayden painstakingly transcribes the eight untitled tracks on ( ) into a series of long vowel sounds and odd clusters of consonants in an attempt to diagram the syntax of this strange new tongue and figure out what the band might be saying (despite their best efforts not to say anything).” Stephen M.
