Legendary among fans since its 1979 release, originally titled I Was Keith Richards' Drug Dealer, this is the absolutely over-the-top, outrageous account of the Stones at their debauched peak Tony Sanchez worked for Keith Richards for eight years buying drugs, running errands, and orchestrating cheap thrills. Here are the Stones at their debauched peak cavorting around the world, smashing Bentleys, working black magic, getting raided, snorting coke, and mainlining heroin. In this notorious chronicle of that time, he records unforgettable accounts of the Stones' perilous misadventures racing cars along the Cote d'Azur, murder at Altamont, nights with the Beatles at the Stones-owned nightclub Vesuvio, frantic flights to Switzerland for blood changes, and the steady stream of women, including Anita Pallenberg, Marianne Faithfull, and Bianca Jagger. Sanchez spares not even himself in these accounts, told with hard-hitting prose and featuring candid photographs.

It provided a very unflattering portrait of Jagger and Richard, which resonated up until, and including, the present. Curious, I read it again and found just as absorbing. Perhaps some things are slightly embellished, but it does have an air of believability to it. Some of these anecdotes are so bizarre, it seems highly unlikely that they were just plucked from someone's imagination. In a way, it all makes perfect sense. The author worked for Keith Richards for man. S. Winterich said An engaging, believable read. I used to own the out-of-print paperback edition of this book. I foolishly gave it away.Sanchez begins with his life as a young, aspiring underworld figure, emulating an older, already established relative. He worked in a casino, and also began to take up photography. (Sanchez writes that he photographed the first Moody Blues album cover.) An acquaintance, London art dealer Robert Fraser, was deeply in debt to another casino run by an underworld boss, and dramatically confided his problem to Sanchez. Sanchez nervily approached the creditor. "Read it if you're a Stones fan" according to Benny. Great fun , took me back, but hello who knows what the reality really is??!!
