As well as the war over who would manage Jackson, the book covers much behind-the-scenes rumbling from the Jackson family. The most intriguing sections of the book unravel the complicated business relationships in which Jackson was involved, his attempts to separate himself from his parents and siblings, and his efforts to push his art further while his fans were demanding more of the same."Kirkus Reviews"This is a sympathetic and admiring look at the final days of a great entertainer who couldn't or wouldn't grow up."June Sawyers, Booklist"Smiley and Ritz wisely spend as much time on the ins and outs of Jackson's managerial team as they do on his emotional health. Smiley and Ritz show how he found the most freedom when lost in the joys of music, both performing and creating. His accidental overdose death is all the more tragic in the context of a time when it seemed his career was getting back on track."Publishers Weekly
Don't buy this book! I had always admired Tavis Smiley, so I had high hopes for this book. I was dismayed to find that he writes as if he knows every thought and feeling that Michael Jackson had. So much has been written about MJ without a firm grounding in fact, I didn't anticipate that Mr. Smiley would do this too. I won't repeat the list of inaccuracies that other reviewers have written of. It's scary . Lost all respect for Tavis. Book is awful in Lost all respect for Tavis. Book is awful in many ways. No original research. Imagines what Michael was thinking in his last months. Consider how appalling and arrogant that is. Tavis is very gentle on the man who went to prison for killing MJ. Facts from court about abuse by his promoters (e.g., being physically slapped before press conference) are overlooked. ETC.. A terrible book filled with nothing but Smiley's speculation and conjecture, and devoid of exculpatory facts about Jackson sanemjfan Frustrating. I, for one, had high expectations for this book. I eagerly waited for its release. I thought that if anyone would write a proper book on Michael Jackson, that would be Tavis Smiley. Unfortunately, I was so, so wrong.Smiley sold his integrity for fame and sales. Luckily, I didn't spend money on this fiction. I was taken aback when I read an interview he gave to some newspa
