Three of O'Brien's books have made the Huffington Post's "Best Cinema Books of the Year.". She had high praise for Spencer Tracy and James Cagney, but her opinion of Humphrey Bogart was less than enthusiastic.A whole new generation of fans enjoyed Sidney's about-turn in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice (1988). Along with acting, her passion for pug dogs and needlepoint contributed to the fascinating persona that was Sylvia Sidney.Author Scott O'Brien had input from Sylvia Sidney's co-stars and friends for this long overdue biography of one of cinema's best. J. L. Paxson said and learned from this fine biography that this was certainly true. I had heard that Ms. Sydney was a cantankerous old broad in her later years, and learned from this fine biography that this was certainly true. But she was much more than that - a very busy actress, not only in the movies which is what I knew her from, but she also did a substantial amount of television work and had an extensive stage career. O'Brien includes reviews from her plays as well as remarks from cast members who worked with her. (Having grown up in Dayton, OH, I was especially interested i. Hollywood's Golden Actress Loves to Read SYLVIA SIDNEY - Paid by the Tear by Scott O'Brien is a wonderful book about the actress and her career. Scott has done his usual and masterful job in portraying this talented and sometimes difficult actress. He gives us detailed and touching accounts of her life from childhood to the death of her her son. While she may have been hard on others, she was even more so on herself. She was vocal about herself, her co-workers, films, and directors. For fans of Hollywood's golden era I recommend this book.. An excellent read by and excellent author. Several of Scott O'Brien's books have received Best Book citations and I predict Sylvia Sidney will also join those ranks. If an author is able to achieve such status then his books have to not only be very good, accurately and well written but also the reader enjoys the book enough to want to purchase each book and upcoming books. If I were to discuss any part of the actress Sylvia Sidney within this review it would be pointless because the book offers a better detail of her and her career.

"Scott O'Brien has written another comprehensive, lovingly researched Hollywood biography.  His latest is an overdue look at the life and career of Sylvia Sidney." Mick LaSalle, SF Gate"O'Brien's book lets us see all the different stages of Sidney's lengthy life and career, providing some welcome insight.  O'Brien has also laboured to find the surviving people, who knew and worked with Sidney, and comments from these co-workers add texture to her story." Dan Callahan, Sight & Sound
