A decent book that totally fails at its stated mission. I bought this book recently with the intention of further augmenting my synthesis techniques. What I got was a pleasant enough read, but keep in mind, the title of this book is "A Comprehensive Guide to Understanding, Programming, Playing, and Recording the Ultimate Electronic Music Instrument". What it *SHOULD* have been titled is "A Comprehensive Guide to Technical Details of Gear That You are Unlikely to Ever Own".It's, basically, a coffee table book of synth porn for enthusiasts. Dozens and dozens of synthesizers, modular synths and other gear are listed, photographed, and tech. HDaddict said Completely misleading title - useless for learning, good as a directory of historical synths. The title is completely misleading - I'm surprised Vail got away with it.The book is a historical directory / timeline of expensive synths from the past and present - not a guide on programming & playing as it is falsely titled.Vail is obviously knowledgeable and passionate, but if you want to actually learn about using synthesizers as an instrument, look elsewhere. This book covers only the "what", leaving the "how" completely out of the picture.I'm a fan of Vail but this book misses the mark (no pun intended) entirely.. Misleading title Mike Control I'm giving this two stars because the title is completely misleading. This book is mostly about Mark Vail's favorite synthesizers and partially about his favorite synthesists, but very little about understanding, programming, playing, or recording synthesizers. The history of synthesizers is interesting, but after a while, it just seems like Vail wanted a book so he could publish all his pictures of Drew Neumann's studio. Especially disconcerting is his boy's club tone, exemplified by his crush on Starr Parodi, who is featured in three pictures and is introduced with this line: "Th

His well-illustrated book is filled with anecdotes and insights, amazing successes and ridiculous flops, expert advice on how to roll your own, lots of commentary on artists, their gear and their methodology, and finally, a guide to recording and disseminating your own musical masterpieces. Mark Vail enthusiastically charts the development of the synthesizer from the Trautonium to the latest software instruments, and also gives us valuable insights and tips from leading electronic composers, including legendary synth pioneer Wendy Carlos." --Dave Stewart, Keyboardist"In the past few de

Building on his life-long interest in music, Mark Vail discovered synthesizers in 1973 and bought his first in 1976. After earning an MFA in electronic music in 1983, he served on the editorial staff at Keyboard magazine from 1988 to 2001.
